By policy, when can an officer use deadly force?
It is the policy of the Brentwood Police Department that officers exhaust all reasonable means before resorting to the use of deadly force. Only when the officer believes the action is in defense of human life, including the officer’s own life, or in defense of any person in imminent danger of serious physical injury.
Officers will employ only the degree of force necessary and reasonable to accomplish lawful objectives. (General Order #4-3 Use of Force/Use of Less Lethal Weapons, General Order #4-5 Use of Firearms/Deadly Force, & General Order #7-3 Rules and Regulations)
In determining which force option is necessary, officers will consider how serious is the suspected offense, the level of the immediate threat to the officer or the public, and is the subject actively resisting arrest.
