Meet the Police Chief

Jim Colvin was appointed Chief of Police in February 2025. He is the city’s fifth police chief since the department was created in 1971. Chief Colvin joined the Brentwood Police Department (BPD) in December 2004, serving over the last 20 years as a patrol sergeant, a detective, a patrol lieutenant, and a captain over the City’s Patrol Division. In 2022, he was named assistant chief of police.

Chief Colvin grew up in Chicago, but his family later moved to Memphis where he graduated from Bolton High School. He enrolled at the University of Tennessee, Martin and earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. After joining the BPD, he went on to receive his master’s degree in emergency management from Jacksonville State University.

in 2024, Colvin graduated from the elite FBI National Academy, Session 291, at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia. He was only the third person from the BPD to attend the academy.

The City of Brentwood is located in Williamson County, Tennessee just south of Metropolitan Nashville. The City encompasses nearly 41 square miles of stately homes, rolling farmlands, and shopping and business centers.  The population is 43,889.

The Brentwood Police Department strives to maintain a safe community by creating and fostering community partnerships.  Some of those include our Citizen Police Academy where residents can learn behind the scenes and more in depth about what our officers encounter each day.   Our department features two community officers who are in elementary and middle schools each week teaching DARE and other community policing practices to our community’s future leaders.   Over the years, we have presented more than fifteen Community Service Awards to individuals, businesses, and organizations in recognition of their service to the City of Brentwood and support of the Brentwood Police Department.

Our team is dedicated to the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.  The Brentwood Police Department has been an Internationally Accredited Law Enforcement Agency since 1989.   Reaccredited in 2017, we are proud to have been awarded the prestigious CALEA Gold Standard Award.
