The Veterans Memorial Ad Hoc Committee consists of eight members, six residents appointed by the Board of Commissioners, one Board of Commissioner Representative, and one Historic Commission Representative.
The City Commission at the May 27, 2025 meeting authorized the creation of an Ad Hoc committee to facilitate the creation of a veterans memorial on city-owned property. The committee will conclude its work no later than 18 months from the date of the first meeting.
Residents will be chosen by the Commission based on qualifications, experience, and demonstrated interest in veterans’ affairs and community service. Applicants may not be currently serving on another board appointed by the City Commission.
Applications will be accepted between May 28 and noon on June 12, 2025, with selection by the City Commission on June 23, 2025. The Commission representative and Historic Commission representative would also be chosen on that date.
The committee will solicit input from local veterans, veterans organizations and the broader community in developing a plan for the development of a memorial. They will gather and analyze information from similar projects, develop and evaluate design proposals, prepare cost estimates and a project schedule, identify potential funding strategies and partnerships, and prepare a written proposal for the City Commission. The proposal will also include a methodology for vetting the names and service records of any veterans to be recognized as part of the memorial. If so requested by the City Commission, the committee may also undertake the fundraising initiatives identified in the report.
