Old Smyrna Road is currently a narrow and heavily traveled east-west connector in Brentwood, carrying traffic between Wilson Pike and Edmondson Pike.  There are multiple new developments planned or currently under construction along the roadway, including the new Harlan Development, and the proposed Windy Hill Park located near the Jones Parkway intersection.  As growth in this area continues, the need for an improved road becomes more and more important.  A study of the roadway’s existing conditions, along with proposed conceptual modifications, has been completed and was presented at a neighborhood meeting on December 14, 2023.

The western half of this Old Smyrna Road Improvement Study limits (about ¾ of a mile in length) contains an extremely narrow roadway, with large trees within just a few feet of the edge of the narrow travel way.  There are also very old stone walls and stone retaining walls within a few feet of the edge of the traveled way.  Immediately off the edge of pavement is a roadside drainage channel along much of the segment. These present concerns for improvement, especially for wider vehicles such as school buses and those driven by first responders.

This current study provides an initial in-depth analysis of existing conditions, along with some proposed design options for improving the roadway.  Field survey will be obtained to assist the engineer in providing the best possible recommendations.  Existing historic features will be earnestly considered during this process.
