Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a firefighter?

Prying the door off a small car, the operator of the “jaws of life” looks over his shoulder. Although he wears full fire gear, he is not a firefighter. Repelling down a training tower, the face of a 55 year old grandmother beams up as she begins her first descent. Most people may never get to try either of these experiences, but it is all part of the curriculum for the Brentwood Fire & Rescue Citizens Fire Academy.

Designed to provide a glimpse into the duties of the department, the academy is often described as being as good as, if not better than, many departments’ initial training program for their own recruits. Although students are offered the opportunity to participate in activities ranging from fire training in ‘the grill’ to touring the fire safety house, participants are only asked to participate directly in activities that they feel comfortable with.

Brentwood Fire & Rescue Citizens Fire Academy is open to adults, with preference given to Brentwood residents and business owners. The three month academy program offers over 30 hours of instructional time, and meets twice a month, including two Saturdays.
