February is Heart Awareness Month

It's a tradition that's over half a century strong. The first proclamation was issued by President Lyndon B. Johnson in February 1964, nine years after he had a heart attack. Since then, every president has annually declared February as American Heart Month.

In February, the Brentwood Fire and Rescue Department offers free CPR classes every Friday night from 6:30-8:30pm at the Brentwood Library.  This is not a certification course.

The class is mainly for adults and those age 16 and older.  Children age ten and older can attend with parents.   The class is based on the American Heart Associations Friends and Family program, which teaches the CPR basics for adults, children, and infants.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, causing about one in four deaths.  Learn more about heart disease.
