Emergency response functions within Brentwood Fire & Rescue include fire suppression, emergency medical first response, technical rescue and hazardous materials response. This is primarily a responsibility of each shift, which operates on a 48 hour-on / 96 hour-off schedule. Each shift (A, B, and C) is led by a Battalion Chief, who serves as the Shift Commander.

Deputy Chief Brian Collins

Brian Collins serves as Deputy Chief. Collins began his fire service career in 1995 in Kentucky, joining Brentwood in 2002 as one of the sixteen firefighters hired with the construction of Station 4. After serving as a Firefighter/Paramedic, Engineer, Lieutenant, and Battalion Chief, Brian promoted to Deputy Chief in December 2020.  Chief Collins obtained his BS in Fire Protection Administration from Eastern Kentucky University & his MPA from Tennessee State University.  A graduate of the National Fire Academy's Executive Fire Officer Program, he also holds the “Chief Fire Officer” designation from the Center for Public Safety Excellence, & has presented a variety of courses at the local, state, & national levels.

Shift Commanders

Battalion Chief Derek Hyde

Derek Hyde serves as the Battalion Chief for A-Shift and has been a member of the Brentwood Fire and Rescue Department since 2002.  Hyde began as a firefighter working his way through the ranks and was promoted to Battalion Chief in December 2020.   During his tenure with Brentwood, Derek has been involved with a variety programs, including the hazardous materials and technical rescue response teams.  Currently, Chief Hyde serves as the department’s accreditation manager and volunteers as an accreditation peer assessor for other departments.   Derek obtained his BS in Political Science from Middle Tennessee State University and an AAS in Fire Science from Volunteer State Community College.  Chief Hyde earned his Fire Officer designation from the Commission on Professional Credentialing in 2016 and his Executive Fire Officer from the National Fire Academy in 2023.

Battalion Chief David W. Harber

David Harber serves as the Battalion Chief for B-shift. Harber began his career with Brentwood Fire and Rescue in July of 1995 after having served in the Army Reserves and completing a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Tennessee. Born and raised in Tennessee, he moved through the ranks of Firefighter, Engineer, Lieutenant, and promoted to the rank of Battalion Chief in January 2014. In 2016, Chief Harber obtained his Fire Officer designation from the Center for Public Safety Excellence.  He earned Chief Fire Officer Designation in 2019. David currently serves as the Program Manager for the Awards and Recognition Committee and the Water Supply Program Supervisor. He spent three years as a firefighter for the North Coffee Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the Army National Guard for 10 years, serving two tours of duty in Iraq. 

Battalion Chief Cody Johnson

Cody Johnson serves as Battalion Chief for C-Shift and has been a member of Brentwood Fire and Rescue since 2005. Johnson began his fire service career in 1995 as a fire explorer with the Centerville Volunteer Fire Department in Middle TN where he continues to volunteer today. After serving as a Firefighter/Paramedic, Engineer, and Lieutenant Cody promoted to Battalion Chief in January of 2024. Cody holds a BS in Fire Service Administration as well as his Fire Officer designation from the Center for Public Safety Excellence. Johnson manages several programs for the department to include the specification and design of the department’s fire apparatus and personal protective equipment. Cody is also an incident command and TECC instructor. Johnson is heavily involved in the departments special operations program where he holds numerous technical certifications and is a Specialist on the Hazardous Materials Team. 

Training Division

Division Chief Nicholas Adams

Nicholas Adams serves as the Division Chief of Training and Risk Management. Adams began his fire service career in 1996 in Alabama, joining Brentwood Fire and Rescue in 2002. Adams rose through the ranks of Firefighter, Engineer, and Lieutenant before being promoted to Division Chief in September 2018. Chief Adams holds the “Fire Officer” designation from the Center for Public Safety Excellence and is certified as an Urban Search & Rescue (US&R) Rescue Specialist through the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service. In 2012, Chief Adams retired from the Alabama National Guard with 20 years of service.
