"Rendezvous at Historic Ravenswood" September 22

Post Date:09/15/2011

Ravenswood HomeThe Brentwood Historic Commission will host a “Rendezvous at Historic Ravenswood” Event to be held Thursday, September 22nd at 5:30 p.m. Ravenswood, an antebellum mansion, was built by James Hazard Wilson II in 1825 and is considered the “crown jewel” of the newly purchased city parkland on Wilson Pike. This event will be the only opportunity to view the house prior to its renovation.

The event features a brief walking tour of the home and historic area followed by a traditional dinner at Historic Oak Hall, constructed in 1845 by James Hazard Wilson II for his son, Samuel. Guests will park at Oak Hall and be driven to Ravenswood for the tour. Guests will then return to Oak Hall for dinner.

“Rendezvous at Historic Ravenswood" will be a special evening and an opportunity to see the pre-Civil War mansion before renovation. This event is a fundraiser for the Brentwood Historic Commission and due to accessibility to the Ravenswood home, there are limited reservations. Individual tickets are $125. For more information please contact Linda Lynch at 371-0060.

Ravenswood was named for Sam Houston whom the Cherokees affectionately called “the Raven”. Houston was the best man at Wilson’s wedding. The house is one of the earliest brick houses constructed in the county, preceding both Carnton (built in 1826) and the Carter House (built in 1830).

The City of Brentwood acquired 320 acres of the Ravenswood Farm in December, 2010 for development as a park. When opened to the public in 2013, the new park will be twice as large as Crockett Park and will remain largely forested with hiking trails.
