CIP Review Budget Work Session

On Monday, March 25, Brentwood City Manager Kirk Bednar submitted the proposed FY 2020-2025 Capital Improvements Program (CIP) to the City Commission.  The Commission will review the draft document and discuss the proposed capital projects at a Work Session on April 2 at 4:00 p.m.  The Work Session will be held in the Annex Room on the 2nd floor of City Hall.  The meeting is open to the public and all who are interested are encouraged to attend.

The CIP is approved annually by the City Commission.  The draft document covers the six-year period between FY 2020 and FY 2025.  The CIP is essentially a financial planning tool, as opposed to a formal budget document where funds are officially appropriated.  It sets forth the capital spending priorities (high-dollar expenditures like building and road maintenance, vehicles, park improvements, water/sewer improvements, etc.) that the City can expect over the next few years.  The CIP is elastic, meaning priorities can change from year to year as new challenges and opportunities arise, but also provides a measure of predictability for purpose of financial planning.

The projects identified in FY 2020 of the CIP will be presented as part of the draft FY 2020 Annual Budget, which is where the Commission authorizes the expenditure of funds.  Since Brentwood operates on a July to June fiscal year, that process takes place in May and June each year.  Both the CIP and the Annual Budget are scheduled for adoption on June 25, 2019.
